How To Clean Wood Furniture

A room full of beautiful wood furniture brings warmth and elegance to any room, however, it’s inevitable that stains and mishaps will cause damage to your furniture. Maybe you wish to restore wood or wicker furniture to it’s former glory.

Below are tips on cleaning and caring for your wood furniture to keep it looking beautiful for a long time.

Removing water stains on wood furniture – There are two way to remove a water stain from wood furniture. 1) lay a blotter cloth over the spot and run a warm iron over it until the stain is gone. 2) rub lemon oil into the spot, let set overnight, wipe the excess oil off.

Removing alcohol stains on wood furniture – any substance containing alcohol (drinks, medicines, cosmetics) can eat through wood finish quickly. When a spill occurs, grab a cloth and moisten it with lemon oil. Rub the spot with the cloth (if the spot is dry, remove with the same method as you wood a burn on wood).

Hide scratches on dark cherry or mahogany wood furniture – rub spot with a cotton swab dipped in iodine.

Hide scratches on unshellacked maple or light cherry wood furniture – rub spot with a cotton swab dipped in iodine diluted 50% with denatured alcohol.

Darken a scratch on wood furniture – scoop out the meat of a walnut and rub it gently on the scratch. Make sure you rub it directly on top of the scratch.




Remove scratches from oiled finishes on wood furniture – take fine steel wool and dip it into light mineral oil or boiled linseed oil. Rub in the direction of the grain. Let oil soak into wood, then wipe scratch area dry with a clean cloth.

Remove burns on wood furniture – obtain finely powdered pumice stone (check woodworking suppliers) and mix with linseed oil. Take a soft cloth and rub the burn, in the direction of the grain, with the paste. Keep repeating until burn spot disappears. This works best on light burns.

Remove glass rings from wood furniture – rub the rings with a mixture made of mayonnaise and white toothpaste. Wipe dry, then polish entire tabletop.

Remove spilled milk stains on wood furniture – dip a damp cloth in ammonia or silver polish and rub stain area. Wipe dry with clean cloth.

Cleaning leather furniture – wash furniture with a solution of 1/4 cup vinegar and a half cup of water. Next, wash furniture with saddle soap (available at shoe and hardware stores). Lastly, rub furniture briskly with a soft cloth.

Caring for wicker furniture – wicker tends to be dry and can get brittle or split. Place brittle wicker furniture inside a bathtub and drench with water to restore moisture. Keep wicker away from heated areas such as stove, radiator, and fireplace.

Furniture polish tips – 1) polish furniture often with a lint-free cloth moistened lightly with furniture polish. 2) use furniture polish sparingly. It’s the rubbing motion (or elbow grease) that is the real secret to maintaining a great shine. 3) stick with either an oil or wax based furniture polish. Using both on the same piece can cause smudges and blotches. 4) remove wax build up by moistening a soft cloth with synthetic turpentine, mineral spirits or liquid polish, and cleaning entire surface.

Sanding:All unfinished furniture is sanded as smooth as possible before any finish is applied. This is the most important step and, to a great degree, determines just how perfect the finished project will be. Sanding is done with progressively finer grits of sandpaper, starting with medium or fine grades, and finishing with very fine. Rubbing is done with the grain to avoid scratches that may show through the finish. There are many different types of sandpaper available, but generally, open coat aluminum oxide paper is preferred for furniture, since it cuts faster and lasts longer. After sanding is completed, all dust is thoroughly removed. This is mostly done with a tack rag dipped into varnish that has been diluted with an equal amount of turpentine or mineral spirits and wrung until almost dry.

Bleaching:This procedure is necessary only if it is desired to lighten the wood's natural color, or to remove undesirable stains. Commercial wood bleach is used wearing rubber gloves and eye protection. The bleach is applied with a brush or sponge and allowed to dry overnight. Then it is sanded lightly with very fine sandpaper to remove raised grain. All dust is then wiped from the wood.

Staining:Stains are used to color the wood to emphasize its grain, to make one type of wood look like another, to create uniform color in a piece which is made up of more than one kind of wood, or to tint patched areas to match the rest of the piece. Most stains are used only over bare, smoothly sanded, clean, dry wood. Of the many types of stain available, the two most popular are penetrating resin stain and pigmented oil or wiping stains. Both these types of stains are available in a wide range of colors. Shades of the same type can be mixed to produce even more color variation. When an oil stain is used, a thin sealer coat is applied to the bare wood first. This gives a more uniform color effect.

Paste Wood Fillers:Open-pore woods, such as walnut, oak and mahogany, require the use of a paste filler if a super-smooth finish is desired. These fillers are available in neutral shades and different colors. The paste filler is brushed onto the clean and dust-free piece with a short, stiff-bristled brush. It is allowed to set until it loses its shine for about 20 to 30 minutes. The excess filler is removed with a rough-textured cloth and the piece is allowed to dry for at least 24 hours before proceeding further.

Finishing:There are many new, improved varnishes or clear coatings available for furniture finishing. Some are very pale for use on light colored furniture. Others offer resistance to foods and alcohol. Linseed oil finish is time-consuming to apply, but gives the wood a beautiful, mellow lustre. Although it is not highly water-resistant, this finish will withstand hot dishes. Also, it is less likely to show scratches than would a varnish finish. Often, this finish is applied directly to raw wood, but it tends to darken the wood in most cases. Every possible trace of dust is removed before applying the first coat of varnish with a good quality natural-bristle brush. The first coat of varnish is thinned with turpentine, mixing gently with a clean stick so that air bubbles are not formed. Successive coats are then applied as the varnish comes from the can. The varnish is allowed to dry completely for atleast 48 hours. Then it is lightly sanded with the finest grade of sandpaper or steel wool available.

Enameling:Enamel is also a good finish choice for inexpensive unpainted. Because enamels are available in a wide range of glosses — from elegant eggshell to the dramatic wet look — and in a rainbow of colors, almost any effect you want is possible. There are two types of enamel -- oil-based and latex (water-thinned). Usually, the oil-based type produces the best results on furniture. This type is available in both regular brush-on and spray formulas. Spray enamel is especially good for small projects and intricately patterned surfaces.

Dan called the store, thinking that they sold him a lemon, only to find out that there was no guarantee because he took it home himself. Dan saved the delivery cost but lost his value because he exposed the unfinished wood to less than ideal conditions. Ideal conditions for buying, storing, and finishing wood are cool dry days. It makes sense to inquire about when the piece was constructed and where. Was it just unpacked in a shipment from India ? Or has it been recently moved from another storeroom? Under what conditions was it stored? Only after you've gotten it finished can you be sure that it won't absorb water from extreme weather exposure.

Mistake #2.I Didn't Notice That it Wasn't Straight.Warping is the single worst problem with wood of all types but unfinished wood is particularly susceptible. Weather conditions, storage, even the saw operator at the lumber yard can all cause varying degrees of warping. Check the piece you're thinking of buying carefully and with a critical eye. Move it around on the floor to check whether the legs are even and balanced. For a wide tabletop you might want to take along a level to complement your eye. Although warping can sometimes be repaired with a technique of wetting and clamping the wood repetitively until it is straight, it is best to reserve this special process for your antique or one of a kind heirlooms as it is time consuming, and requires some degree of expertise.

Mistake #3.Those Knots Give The Wood a Lot of Character.Yes they are charming and give a storybook appearance to some pieces but they are not desirable in large numbers and are regarded as a defect in the wood. All wood furniture must be checked for defects such as knots, weaknesses, dry rot (characterized by a spongy hollow feeling under pressure from fingertips), discolored or uneven patches, or any other obvious conditions. I'm sure somebody from the Furniture Manufacturers' Association of Malaysia or something will have explanations for it, but for my money there is no good reason to put balsa wood in any part of any furniture. Whether they are saving shipping costs or they just have a cheap supply of it, anybody that puts balsa in their furniture is likely to cut corners other ways too, that you might not have noticed.

Mistake #5.All Wood Looks Good When It's Finished.People who like wood, the look, the smell, the touch, sometimes get lost in the romance and lose all their practical sense. Even if it's beautiful, is this type of wood appropriate for the finish you want? Not all woods take stains or other special finishes in the same way. Wood is peculiar in
that sometimes two pieces side by side of the same species of wood may stain differently. Given that you may not get all the pieces to share the same color or textured look, put some thought into matching the style of your pieces. Don't think that all you have to do is buy all the pieces of the same type of wood and that will be enough to make them all blend together in one house or one room. Eclectic may be the look you want but if so decide that before buying your pieces, don't get there by accident.

Mistake #6.Unfinished Furniture is the Same Price.It's a mistake to believe any price is standard. Take advantage of the free market and do some comparative shopping. The drawers are not dovetailed but nailed together with aluminum brads. Pulling hard on those handles especially when the oil wears off the runners causes an awful stress on them. They've already come off one of the drawers only a month after it's bought. The double bed in the corner of the showroom looked gorgeous too. It's made of a strong walnut with a beautiful grain. But the slats holding up the mattress look a little thin, and they only cover two millimeters of the frame. Wonder who will get to discover that. Auntie Ann has put on a little weight lately. Hope she'll be okay on that bed.... Check every detail of every stress point and component part hidden behind those good looks. Beware of poor quality finishing. Do the doors of a cupboard fit properly? Are side corners detailed as nicely as the front? What is it held together with? Do long shelves of a bookcase or a hutch have strong center support? Look under and behind the piece to evaluate its construction with a critical eye.

Mistake #9. No Need to Check For Infestation If the Piece is New.Even new furniture can be infested with wood worm, boring beetles, and termites particularly if the piece is an export from central or southeast Asia, South America , Africa , and the Caribbean Islands . Quality control does not necessarily meet American or European standard evaluation procedures. Infestation of wood could jeopardize not only your new purchase but your other furniture as well. Look for worm tracks, Tiny single holes or flying ants dead or alive around under and behind the piece. Be especially cautious with antique pieces as they are particularly susceptible.
